NMAAM to Host Award-Winning Author Alice Faye Duncan for Special Storytelling and Music Experience
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nashville, TN — The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) will welcome award-winning author and National Board Educator Alice Faye Duncan for a special live book reading on Wednesday, March 18, from 10:30 – 11:30 AM. The event will blend two of NMAAM’s educational initiatives, creating an experience that connects storytelling, music, and African American cultural traditions.
During the event, Duncan will read from several of her acclaimed children’s books that celebrate American music and Black history. Her work is widely recognized for its vivid storytelling and lyrical language that introduces young readers to influential artists, historical moments, and the cultural traditions that have shaped the American soundtrack.
Duncan is the author of numerous award-winning titles, including I Gotta Sing, Yellow Dog Blues, Blues Boy: The B.B. King Story, and the bestselling Opal Lee and What It Means to Be Free, which has sold more that 100,000 copies since its release in 2022.
Adding a live musical element to the program, harmonica player Henry Perry will perform alongside the reading. His performance will help illustrate the musical traditions referenced in Duncan’s storytelling, creating a dynamic connection between literature and the sounds that have shaped African American musical heritage.
The event integrates Story Soundz, NMAAM’s literacy-focused program that uses music and storytelling to strengthen reading and comprehension skills, with From Nothing to Something, the museum’s program exploring the origins of sound-making traditions and the creative ways everyday objects and instruments contribute to musical expression.
Families, students, educators, and community members are invited to attend this interactive morning of stories and music that celebrates the voices, creativity, and history that continue to shape American culture.
