Aristocrat of Bands: iT dOESN’T Rain on the aob
Aristocrat of Bands: It Doesn’t Rain on the AOB is an exhibition that is part of an ethnography project that captures the experiences and significant cultural traditions that are practiced by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) marching bands during homecoming celebrations. NMAAM staff gathered video, audio, and photographs beginning the week of October 2, 2024, and leading up to Tennessee State University’s Homecoming events on October 12. The project sought to preserve the stories, traditions, and sense of community that make this annual celebration a vibrant expression of pride and excellence.
On display, guests find full uniforms from the band and the majorettes, as well as mounted photo and video displays of live performances from the AOB, and quotes from members throughout history. NMAAM’s exhibition opened to the public on Juneteenth, 2026, in alignment with TSU’s 114th Founder’s Day and the museum’s annual Community Day celebration.
