THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM OVERVIEW FOR THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC
Members of the National Museum of African American Music’s (NMAAM) Volunteer Program are extensions of our museum education team, acting as guides, storytellers, orators, and department assistants. Volunteers assist in both museum operations and visitor service capacities, volunteers are engaging and enticing, serving to set the stage for the gallery experiences to
follow.
Current Volunteer Roles
Stage Crew
Stage Crew Volunteers within this capacity serve within roles at front-of-house locations including the Lobby, Fifth Ave Entrance, Broadway Entrance, Roots Theater, Rivers of Rhythm Pathway, and Five Principal Galleries (see the gallery description in section 2). Front Line Volunteers support museum operations by providing general assistance to the public while working in high-traffic,
public spaces.
Amplifiers
Amplifiers as Volunteers within this capacity work directly with specific departments/teams, such as public programs and the museum gift shop, to assist the museum in engaging visitors. These roles, unlike Front Line Volunteers, do not engage with the public as often. Individuals who work behind the scenes support the museum by assist various teams in achieving their departmental objectives. These volunteers work in departments and areas including the Amplify Gift Shop, Education Center, and Community Education Rooms.

Griots
Volunteers within this capacity use creative interpretation techniques to act as storytellers, leading visitors through gallery tours. Griots will share music history, interpret artifacts, and facilitate discussions during gallery tours to enhance the visitor experience and educate on
various musical genres.
