Historical Narrative
The journey begins after World War II, with the return of Black servicemen and the emergence of independent Black record labels and radio stations. From this cultural shift emerged rhythm and blues—a fusion of small-group jazz, vocal quartet harmonies, blues, and gospel.
The gallery traces R&B’s transformation into rock and roll, its rebranding for white audiences, and its evolution into soul and funk during the 1960s and 1970s. Key moments include the groundbreaking success of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and the breaking of MTV’s unofficial color barrier in the 1980s.
