Ongoing exhibit
After experiencing the powerful introductory film in the Roots Theater, visitors step into the Rivers of Rhythm Corridor—a dynamic central passage that connects all five themed galleries of the museum. More than just a walkway, this corridor is a vibrant exhibition space that brings African American history and music to life.

Interactive Experience
Explore the connections between historical events & musical developments.
Explore Four Centuries of History and Sound
At the heart of the corridor are interactive touch tables featuring a rich, multimedia timeline. Spanning from 1619 to 2016, the timeline is divided into 13 distinct eras, each highlighting:
- Three pivotal historical moments
- Musical samples that reflect the spirit and sound of the time
Together, these elements reveal how the evolution of African American music is deeply intertwined with broader historical and cultural developments.

Immersive “Takeover Moments”
One of the corridor’s most captivating features is the Takeover Moments—a multisensory experience that transforms the space into a live concert environment. Periodically, the touchscreens fade, the lighting shifts, and the walls come alive with concert footage projected in stunning detail. These moments use sound, lighting, and multiple camera angles to fully immerse visitors.
Featured performances include:
- Prince’s legendary 2007 Super Bowl halftime show
- Christone “Kingfish” Ingram live at Club Ebony in Indianola, Mississippi
- James Brown’s electrifying 1964 performance at the T.A.M.I. Show in Santa Monica, California
“The spirit [or steadfast determination] lives in our peoples’ songs in the sublime grandeur of “Deep River,” in the driving force of “Jacob’s Ladder,” in the militancy of “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho,” and in the poignant beauty of all of our spirituals. “
– Paul Robeson
