Featuring, Raymond Boyd
During NMAAM’s yearlong celebration of Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary, the Midwest was highlighted in the winter of 2023 through the work of Chicago native Raymond Boyd.
Beginning in the early 1980s, Boyd gained recognition for his black-and-white photographs documenting legendary Hip Hop artists touring the Midwest. His work has been widely published and featured in galleries around the world. The This Is Hip Hop: Midwest exhibition showcased a curated selection of Boyd’s iconic images, preserving the region’s Hip Hop culture during the 1980s.
Accompanying the photographs were in-depth interpretations developed by Boyd specifically for the exhibition. The opening evening also featured a Q&A with Boyd and DJ Kenny Smoov of 92Q, offering visitors a firsthand look into the stories behind the images.
