Uncovering ROots: Allison Russell
In April 2024, the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) honored the extraordinary artistry of singer-songwriter Allison Russell through our Uncovering Roots series. This series highlights the experiences of artists of color as they navigate and shape the foundational roots of contemporary genres such as Bluegrass, Folk, and Country.
Fresh off her 2023 GRAMMY win for “Best Roots Performance” with Eve Was Black, Russell was celebrated with an exhibition created in collaboration with Fantasy Records, Concord, and Vector Management. On display were objects representing key milestones in her musical journey, offering visitors an intimate look at the artistry and influence of one of today’s most powerful voices in roots music.
