Uncovering Roots: Valerie June

In April 2025, the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) honored the genre-defying artistry of Valerie June through its Uncovering Roots series. The exhibition, titled Uncovering Roots: Valerie June, celebrated her life, music, and creative journey as part of NMAAM’s Music Legacy Series.

The event featured an intimate artist talk and lively Q&A, during which June shared insights into her songwriting process, musical influences, and the spirit behind her signature blend of folk, gospel, soul, and blues—what she describes as “organic moonshine roots music.”

On display were a curated selection of her performance outfits and several of her most notable albums, offering visitors a closer look at her evolving artistic expression and enduring legacy in contemporary music.
