During the National Museum of African American Music’s celebration of Black Music Month in June 2023, we proudly recognized the legacy of Tennessee State University’s Aristocrat of Bands.
For more than a century, Tennessee State University has stood as a beacon of excellence in higher education. With a distinguished alumni network of over 60,000 graduates, the university remains a cornerstone of Nashville’s African American community.
Founded in 1946 under the leadership of its first director, J.D. Chavis, the Aristocrat of Bands has grown into an award-winning ensemble celebrated nationwide. Among their many achievements is the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Roots Album, a testament to their artistry and impact.
The artifacts and objects displayed highlighted TSU’s profound musical contributions—contributions that continue to inspire, uplift, and entertain audiences worldwide.
