Uncovering Roots: The War and Treaty

In June 2025, during Black Music Month and as part of NMAAM’s Been Country: Black Roots in Rhythm event in partnership with CMA Fest, the National Museum of African American Music celebrated the acclaimed duo The War And Treaty through its Roots Uncovered series.

The event included a fireside chat with Grammy Award-winners Michael and Tonya Trotter, alongside the unveiling of a companion exhibition highlighting their artistry and style. On display were four iconic outfits worn by the duo—featured both on tour and in album promotions—presented alongside the music that inspired each look.

Through this exhibition, NMAAM honored The War And Treaty’s powerful contributions to contemporary music while spotlighting the deep roots of African American influence in Country and Americana.
