George Clinton: Boundless, The Manifestation of Self Expression

Featuring: Art by George Clinton

From September 23 through November 30, 2022, the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) presented Boundless: The Manifestation of Self Expression, a major exhibition by funk music icon George Clinton, also known as the Prime Minister of Funk. Presented in partnership with AARP, the exhibit featured 33 vibrant works of art, reflecting the eclectic colors and creativity that define Clinton’s unique style.

For over five decades, Clinton’s groundbreaking sound has been cited as the DNA of Hip Hop and Urban Culture. As a visual artist, his work is equally adventurous and eclectic, transforming rhythm into vision and delighting audiences with its immersive energy.

The exhibition opened with a private reception and curator talk on September 22, 2022, for NMAAM members to preview the collection ahead of the public debut. “We are honored to showcase another extension of Clinton’s genius in the museum,” said Katie Rainge-Briggs, NMAAM’s Exhibitions and Collections Manager. “From his artifacts in our permanent galleries to the Funkadelic flag displayed in our lobby and now this exhibition, Clinton’s impact on the arts, both visually and sonically, continues to inspire generations worldwide.”

Boundless was displayed in NMAAM’s Feature Gallery, offering visitors an immersive opportunity to experience the artistry and vision of one of music’s most influential figures.
