Alice Randall: My Black Country
In September 2024, the National Museum of African American Music celebrated Professor Alice Randall’s groundbreaking influence on African American representation in contemporary country music.
Randall first arrived in Nashville from Detroit in 1983, beginning a 40-year career dedicated to examining and amplifying the role of African Americans in roots music. A distinguished professor at Vanderbilt University, she has become a leading voice in reshaping the narrative of country music.
On April 9, 2024, Randall released her book and companion album, My Black Country. This project honored country music as a genre deeply rooted in Black traditions while highlighting its ongoing evolution and cultural significance.
Through artifacts and images, the exhibition explored Randall’s impact on country music and celebrated her enduring legacy as a scholar, storyteller, and cultural trailblazer.
